Transmission Service: Questions to Ask
General questions vehicle owners can ask when discussing transmission service or a shifting concern.
Transmission operation and service requirements vary widely by vehicle. Any persistent shifting concern should be assessed by a qualified technician.
Describe what changed
Record when the concern occurs, whether the vehicle is cold or warm, which gear range is involved and whether a warning light appears. These observations can help guide an inspection.
Use the manufacturer guidance
Service intervals, fluids and procedures should match the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements. Do not assume that a service procedure appropriate for one vehicle is right for another.
Discuss the recommendation
Ask the shop to explain the inspection findings and the recommended next step. Confirm the estimate and current availability before authorizing work.
